Yes, it can get expensive feeding your family organic, whole, healthful food, but you don’t have to break the bank in order to do so. Baking and cooking your own meals and snacks is s far more cost-effective way to eat well. And I don’t know about you, but I’ve had it with paying $7.99 for a 500g bag of organic granola.

There’s no reason why you should have to shell out all that cash for boxed, pre-packaged cereal when you can whip up a batch of home-baked organic granola with just the right amount of all your favorite tasty morsels. Feel free to substitute your favorite nuts and/or dried fruit.

Home Made Granola

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F

Ingredients

½ cup dried coconut
¼ cup wheat germ
1 tbsp pine nuts

4 cups rolled oats
¼ cup sunflower seeds
1 cup smashed almonds
1 tbsp sesame seeds
2 tbsp pumpkin seeds
¼ tsp ground ginger
¼ tsp ground nutmeg
½ tsp ground cinnamon

¼ cup honey
¼ cup unsulphured blackstrap molasses
½ cup butter
1 tsp vanilla extract

¾ cup raisins
¼ cup dried cranberries
¼ cup chopped dried apricots
¼ cup carob chips
½ cup puffed kamut

Baking sheet of granola

spread granola over baking sheet, bake, and cool completely before breaking it up.

Directions

  1. Spread dried coconut on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in preheated oven (350 degrees F) for 4 to 6 minutes, or until lightly golden toasted – watch carefully, so as not to burn. Remove to small bowl and set aside.  Toast wheat germ and pine nuts on baking sheet; set aside .
  2. Reduce the oven temperature to 300 degrees F.
  3. In large bowl, combine rolled oats, sunflower seeds, smashed almonds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon.
  4. Melt honey, molasses and butter in small saucepan over medium-low heat.  Stir in vanilla.
  5. Add butter mixture to oat mixture in large bowl. Mix evenly with a wooden spoon.
  6. Spread evenly across one large (15×22-inch) or two smaller baking sheets, and bake in preheated oven (300 degrees F) for 25 minutes.
  7. Cool granola on a baking sheet until totally cool.
  8. Break up granola with your hands into whatever size chunks you prefer.
  9. Toss granola with raisins, dried cranberries, chopped dried apricots, carob chips, and puffed kamut.
  10. Serve dry as a snack, or with rice or soy milk, dairy milk, yogurt or cream, and fresh fruit.
